Kalan is a neighbourhood Filipino kitchen at 1449 Arlington Street, in the heart of Winnipeg’s North End, and it runs under two names. Kalan Restaurant and Catering Services has the day from 7 am: a casual, cafeteria-style service where you can see every dish on the steam table, build a plate of home-style Filipino cooking for breakfast or lunch, and order party trays for the whole family. Kalan At Night takes the evening from 5 pm, Tuesday to Sunday, with sharing plates for the table, the grill and late-night cravings. One address, one kitchen door, two menus.

Home-style Filipino cooking on Arlington Street

Kalan has been part of the North End for years, long enough that Filipino families, shift workers and first-time visitors all treat it as their regular table. The cooking is straightforward and home-style — the familiar flavours Filipino guests grew up with, and an easy, friendly introduction for anyone trying Filipino food in Winnipeg for the first time. Between the two menus the door at 1449 Arlington Street is open from 7 AM every day, and on into the evening Tuesday to Sunday. Neighbours from William Whyte, Inkster-Faraday, St. John’s, Shaughnessy Park and Point Douglas are only a short drive away.

By day — Kalan Restaurant and Catering Services

Daytime dishes are served cafeteria-style from the steam table, so you can see your favourites before you choose them. We open at 7 AM every day, so the All Day Filipino Breakfast counter is on from first thing: tapsilog, tocilog, longsilog, hotsilog, bangsilog, biyasilog and the Deluxe Filipino Breakfast, with Canadian breakfast plates alongside them. Through the middle of the day come pork sisig, lechon kawali, pansit canton, grilled liempo, tortang talong, lumpiang toge and lunch combos of dinuguan and igado. This is also the kitchen that caters birthdays, church gatherings, office lunches and community events across Winnipeg. By night — Kalan At Night

From 5 PM, Tuesday to Sunday, the kitchen switches to the evening table. Kalan At Night is built around big sharing plates for two to three — crispy pata, sinigang na bulalo, bulalo, kare kare, lechon kawali, chicharon bulaklak, crispy sisig, inihaw na baka, pork BBQ and whole chicken BBQ — with rice combo meals that pair the same grilled and fried mains with rice for one. An All Day Cravings section covers mami, lugaw, pares, lumpia and lumpiang togue, plus a shawarma line of wraps, rice and fries. Serving from 5 PM Tuesday through Sunday, until 11 PM midweek and midnight from Friday to Sunday. Closed Mondays. Dine-in, takeout and delivery. See the Kalan At Night menu.
